Description
A Fabulous Bleached Elm Carved Sculpture of the Greek Mythology 'Prometheus' c1970 In Greek mythology, an eagle was sent by the god Zeus to eternally torment the Titan Prometheus as punishment for stealing fire from the heavens and giving it to humanity. The Crime: Prometheus, a benefactor of humankind, tricked Zeus and stole fire, a power meant only for the gods, to bring knowledge and civilization to humans. The Punishment: Enraged, Zeus had Prometheus chained to a rock on Mount Caucasus. Every day, a giant eagle (sometimes referred to as the Caucasian Eagle, or Aëtos Dios, the sacred eagle of Zeus) would feast on his immortal liver. The Agony: Because Prometheus was immortal, his liver would miraculously regenerate completely each night, only for the eagle to return the following day to continue the endless torture. The Release: This torment continued for many years until the hero Heracles, with Zeus's eventual permission, killed the eagle with an arrow and freed Prometheus. The eagle served as the instrument of Zeus's wrath, symbolizing the severe consequences of defying the king of the gods. This powerful image was a popular subject in ancient Greek art and literature.
