Description
An imposing vintage striking mantel clock, by British maker ‘Smiths Clocks & Watches Ltd’, one of the UK’s most successful 20th Century clockmakers. (This fine example would have been assembled in Glanrhyd, South Wales, by the Anglo-Celtic Watch Company [a subsidiary of Smiths], known locally and affectionately as the 'tick-tock factory'!)
This model is called the 'Tompion' (as indicated on the base of the clock), having a Walnut case with lovely, aged patination, a hinged and glazed front door, and a domed pagoda apex and shaped brass carrying handle. The chapter ring dial is white enamel with black Louis XIV style hands and a matted brass centre. This is then surrounded by 4 x brass maiden head spandrels.
Accessed by a hinged rear door, the clock has the superb Smiths front winding 8-day F7B, ('F7, Variant B'), pendulum driven movement, with two-train striking mechanism. The movement sits between its two lacquered and line-dotted plates, the backplate being stamped with the relevant aged Smiths logo and the number '5712', (which means “Dec 1957”, when the clock was built!). The clock also comes with its original mat black coloured Smith pendulum bob, made of brass casing filled with lead and its original Smith signed steel winding key.
A fine, collectable, and eye-catching, English vintage bracket clock.
