Bracket clocks first appeared in the 17th Century as small weight driven clocks placed on a wall shelf and grew in popularity during the Georgian Era. Their smaller size made them highly practical for any home, and when spring gearing replaced weights they could be easily transported around the house with ease. Over the years the styles of bracket clocks have remained largely unchanged and are often made of a mix of materials including mahogany, oak, brass and exotic finishes such as ormolu, enamel and tortoiseshell. While 20th Century examples tend to have simpler designs than their 18th and 19th Century predecessors, there is usually still plenty of beautiful detailing on the faces.
Since antique and vintage bracket clocks tend to have been cherished and well used in most households it is worthwhile purchasing one from reputable dealers such as at LoveAntiques who will have ensured the mechanisms are in good working order for many more years of use.
