Description
English vintage bracket timepiece of fine quality, by world-famous clock and watchmaker Rotherham & Sons of Coventry. (The clocks design is one of their awarding winning “Ashow” models). The clocks hand-crafted honey Walnut case, exhibits good graining and aged patination, with a bell top pagoda and a shaped brass carrying handle. The silvered break-arch chapter ring dial is mounted on a brass plate with black Roman numerals and additional fleur-de-lis and minute indicators. Inside the ring is a matted brass centre with a pair of blued steel Louis XIV style hands secured by a threaded collet. The dial is then surrounded by four brass maiden head spandrels and a silvered “Tempus Fugit” ("Time Flies") disc under which, is the name “Rotherham.” This is then all protected by an arched glazed tablet, mounted into the case. Accessed by a hinged rear door, the exceptional circular 8-day lever movement is driven by a Rotherham’s 11-jewel screwed balance platform escapement with Chronovar hair spring (helping to ensure the escapement is impervious to temperature change and resistant to corrosion). The platform being signed “Made in England” and “R&S.” (Such was the accepted holistic quality and workmanship of Rotherham’s platform escapements they were often used by other high-end English clockmakers for use in their own branded clock movements). The Military style hand winding button and fixed rear winding key are screw mounted on the lacquered concentrically snailed brass backplate, which is stamped "Rotherham Made in England.” The plate also bears the serial no. “10669”, providing the evidence to state that the clock was built c1952. The movement is encased in its original factory issued Perspex dust cover, and affixed to the inside of the rear door, is a brass presentation plaque to “H. Adams” in recognition of 25 years employment service, (which can also be witnessed on the front Tempus Fugit disc). There is a general acknowledgement today, that between circa 1860 to 1960 the famous ‘Rotherham and Sons’ brand were at the cutting-edge of British clock and watchmaking excellence, one of the continual leaders in innovation and quality build. Therefore, it is reasonable and safe to surmise that their fabulous Ashow model bracket clock is a thoroughbred in its class!
