One of the many writing boxes currently in stock. Large brass bound mid Victorian burr walnut writing box with many features in extremely fine condition. Highly attractive grain. Brass edge bound to the top and front and rear corners. Subtle inlaid brass strips to the top and front complemented by the inlays ‘framing’ the cartouche and escutcheon plate. All brass ware is original, complete and in excellent condition as is the veneer. The lid opens to reveal an impressive interior. Replacement leather with gilt embossed borders and corner motifs in excellent condition. Office section comprising of twin inkpot sections, stamp/wafer slope and dished pen tray with storage space beneath. The inkpot is a genuine antique and looks to be in unused condition. Twin sliding clasps to access the storage space beneath the upper section. Secret drawers accessed by raising the divider between the inkpot and stamp slope sections whereupon a concealing panel springs open nicely. Security was obviously an important requirement for the original owner as there is a second lock to safeguard the front storage area and in effect the secret drawers. In addition the main box lock has a Bramah mechanism, considered the most secure lock throughout much of the 1800’s. A huge amount of information is available on the web re’ the lock mechanism and the inventor, the founder of what is the oldest lockmaking company in the world. Replacement working keys are provided for both locks. The style of this box can be considered a ‘classic’ and was popular from circa 1830 to the end of the 1800’s.
