Description
Please see my stock page for the largest selection of writing boxes available on this website. If you like your antique boxes to have an extremely high degree of original features and to be in exceptional condition then this item is certainly worthy of consideration. No missing or replaced veneer. All brassware throughout is original and complete. Ornate inlaid brass cartouche with matching escutcheon. 4 brass protective corner pieces to each of the 4 box edges. Inlaid brass straps that extend down the full depth of the box to the rear rather than ending at the back edge of the lid as with the majority of mid-late Victorian writing boxes of a similar style. No shrinkage splits or nasty ‘digs’ or scratches. The lid closes perfectly square. Hinges, twin sliding slope clasps and triple catch lock all in fine condition. Two working keys are provided one of which is possibly original. The office section comprises of the standard removable dished pen tray with storage space beneath, stamp slope and twin inkpot sections with a replacement pair of matching brass screw top inkpots in perfect condition. Both storage sections beneath the writing platform are in very clean condition with the original lacquered surfaces throughout. Twin secret drawers with the original pull tabs still intact accessed by raising the divider between the inkpot and stamp slope sections. The mechanism works beautifully with the concealing panel springing open nicely. Security might well have been an important requirement for the original owner as there is an additional lock to the part of the writing platform above the drawers. The shield style escutcheon is original, as is the lock and quite possibly the original working key. The box has the bonus of still having the original gilt and blind embossed leather in quite remarkable condition. The leather is of course split between the fold line between the two box sections but that is to be expected as it is the only line that remains exposed to the elements when the box is closes. More importantly, the split is thin with crisp edges and the two other fold lines where the two ‘flaps’ open/close are Fully intact ensuring that they remain in place when accessing the storage areas. Arguably one of The most important features of the box for the purists out there is the patina. Other than a very gentle clean to remove a few specks of what was probably the usual specks of white emulsion I doubt that this box has been touched for a great many years other than light dusting and waxing. It is not common to come across many brass bound boxes whereby the brass features an unspoilt patina. Even more so when the brassware is of such an even colouring brought about by the discolouration to the original lacquer. At the very least heavier discolouration is usually found to the rear brassware. Given that there are only ink stains to one inkpot section, that all pull tabs on the drawers and writing platform are original and fully intact, the condition throughout and the outstanding patina of the veneer and brassware I believe that this box has had Very little use. Please note….The patina of the box is better in person than the photographs suggest. A box of museum quality, worthy of any collection…..and of course is a fine investment piece. Very Highly Recommended.
