Description
Size: 46cm (18 inches) tall. Condition: Excellent condition - some original shakes in the wood which are from the date of making. This striking and beautiful scuplture is the work of Cecil Hugh Twistelton, an influential figure in the vibrant artistic life of Leicester in the mid 20th century. The scuplture is carved from a single piece of elm carefully chosen so that the grain follows the contours of the carving. It is signed on the base C H Twisleton in carved letters, with the date 1952. Twistleton was both a painter and sculptor in wood - his painting followed the style of artists such as Paul Nash. He was president of the Leicester Sketch Club twice (between 1937-8 and 1944-45) and a member of the Leicester Society of Artists.
