Description
We have for sale a very attractive Edwardian watercolour painting by the recently re-discovered landscape artist Cissie (Sarah Emma) Burrell Smith 1854-1943. The painting depicts a readily recognisable Cornish coastal scene, namely Clodgy point at high tide, looking along the rocks across the submerged beach and out to sea incorporating choppy seas along with seagulls and what could be a sail on the horizon. The painting is indistinctly signed in pencil to the bottom left C Burrell Smith with the title St Ives Beach and dated 1904. The painting has also been over-signed by the artist C Burrell Smith and dated 1904 in ink. About the Artist Sarah Emma Burrell Smith, 2nd daughter of the well-known and prolific landscape artist James Burrell Smith (known as Waterfall Smith) and his wife Eleanor Laidler, was born in Alnwick circa 1854. The Burrell Smiths moved to Kensington sometime around 1859. Sarah Emma (known as Cissie Burrell Smith) first exhibited her work alongside her father James Burrell Smith in 1877 at the Dundee Fine Art Exhibition held at the Albert Institute with a work titled Stitchel Lynn. Sarah Emma Burrell Smith listed herself in the 1891, 1901 and the 1911 census returns in the name of Cissie Burrell Smith as a professional landscape watercolour artist. She was known to have signed her work C Burrell Smith in a hand similar to that of her father James and it seems that historically much of her work has been mistakenly attributed to him. This was not uncommon in the late 19th/early 20th century, for example, the prolific artist Frank Hider was believed to have used the pseudonym M Hider, when in actual fact M Hider was his landscape artist daughter Maud Hider. Cissie (Sarah Emma) Burrell Smith died in Wokingham in 1943 aged 88.
