Description
Of military history interest! A fine coloured aquatint entitled "Battle of the Nile Aug 1st 1798" from the volume "The Naval Achievements of Great Britain from the year 1793-1817" published by James Jenkins of The Strand, London in 1817. Roger Quarm the curator of pictures at the National Maritime Museum has said of this work "As a record of naval events spanning a period of over twenty years it has no precedent. At no time prior to 1817 had a publisher attempted such a complete volume of documentary naval prints. It is the quality of accuracy which makes Jenkins so valuable". The published volume offered 55 aquatint illustrations after paintings by T Whitcombe. Most engravings were by T Sutherland, but others were done by Jeakes and Bailey (as in this example). The Battle of the Nile was a major naval battle fought between the British Royal Navy and the Navy of the French Republic at Aboukir Bay on the Mediterranean coast off the Nile Delta of Egypt from the 1st to the 3rd of August 1798. Napoleon was trying to invade Egypt as part of a plan to disrupt English trade routes. Nelson attacked at dusk and most of the French ships were destroyed, leaving the French army stranded. Nelson was rewarded with a peerage and £10000 (£5M Today).
