Description
Offered for sale is an oval shaped sandwich plate by Crown Staffordshire decorated in the Pagoda pattern. Comprises white fine bone china, delicately decorated with Chinese style flora, pagodas and cranes inspired by the Chia Ching dynasty. Manufactured by Crown Staffordshire, Fenton, Staffordshire, Uk, in the 1940s and 1950s. The Maker’s Marks on the base were used from the 1930s and prior to 1956. "Crown Staffordshire Estd 1801" "Fine Bone China" "England" and the pattern name "Pagoda" It also states ” Inspired by the ancient Chinese paintings of exotic birds, pagodas and flora of Chia Ching” 1796-1820. Whilst the Backstamp says "Estd 1801" the Crown Staffordshire Porcelain Company was not formed until 1889. So, how did they get this date of 1801? According to Jewitt's "Ceramic Art of Great Britain". The Minerva works was established in 1801 and via a number of companies the works eventually came into the hands of the Crown Staffordshire Porcelain Company. So, it is the pottery factory that was established in 1801 and not the company. This type of stretching of the truth with dates was not uncommon with pottery companies as they tried to show longevity.
