Early 18th Century Polychrome Carving of St. Nicholas

A wonderful work of early 18th century Christian religious iconography, this sculpture is carved in fruitwood and painted over a gesso base. It is a great size for a decorative interior piece at just over a metre in height. Displaying the sign of benediction with his right hand and wearing vestments, this is likely to be a depiction of St. Nicholas. - Painted red vestments overlying a grey robe beneath, with gold coloured highlights and wearing a mitre. - Black plinth base. - Bearded, with flesh tones to the face, neck and hand. - Heavy, solid piece.
