Description
A Song Dynasty Celadon Funerary Vase circa 960 - 1279. The piece is decorated with nine robed Daoist monks, two flowers and a dragon. The vase has some very symbolic imagery. The combination of nine robed Daoist monks, two flowers, and a dragon is rich with traditional Chinese symbolism, numerology, and Daoist cosmology, hunping or "soul vase". These represent a classic tradition in Chinese ceramics, reaching its height during the Song Dynasty (960–1279 CE). These vessels bridge the visual elements of the monks, dragons, and flowers into a singular spiritual object designed to guide the soul and provide sustenance in the afterlife. This is a wonderful piece of Chinese art and can be found in various museums worldwide.
