Description
A charming early 19th century French trumeau wall mirror, dating to circa 1825, retaining excellent decorative character and period appeal. This elegant mirror is framed in the Empire taste, with fluted gilt columns surmounted by striking Egyptian Revival style female bust capitals, reflecting the fascination with classical antiquity that followed Napoleon’s Egyptian campaigns. The original verre églomisé / mercury plate mirror glass displays the beautifully foxed surface one would hope to find, giving the piece authentic age and atmosphere. Above the mirror plate sits a delightful hand-painted panel depicting a peaceful rural scene with cattle being driven through a village landscape, adding warmth, narrative charm and decorative interest. The original gilt and painted finish remains, with attractive mellow wear commensurate with age, enhancing its genuine antique character. A wonderfully decorative piece, ideal for a hallway, drawing room, bedroom or cloakroom, where it would add both elegance and light. Equally effective in a traditional interior or as a striking contrast in a contemporary setting. A particularly appealing and affordable period mirror with strong Empire influence and lovely original detail.
