Description
An early English walnut drop-leaf gateleg table dating from the late 17th to early 18th century. The table is constructed in solid walnut with three boards forming a near-square top when fully extended, the leaves finished with distinctive double-rounded corners which give the piece a soft and characterful outline typical of early drop-leaf tables. The leaves are joined with a generously cut rule joint, the depth of the joint indicating that it was originally formed from a thicker piece of walnut, as the rule profile must be worked within the thickness of the timber itself. Early tables were often made from wider and heavier planks of walnut, allowing a deeper rule joint such as this.
The walnut displays attractive natural colour variation and figure, including a lighter section of sapwood visible along one edge — a feature commonly encountered in early walnut furniture where wide boards were used across their full width.
The plain frieze encloses single gateleg supports to each side and the table stands on slender turned tapering legs terminating in compact pad feet. The proportions are well judged, with the relatively deep frieze and slender legs giving the table an elegant yet purposeful stance. Traditional pegged construction is evident throughout.
The table is notably heavy for its size, reflecting both the density of the walnut and the robust manner in which tables of this period were constructed. When closed it forms a compact side or console table, opening to a generous near-square dining or occasional table when the leaves are raised.
