Description
A good mid-18th century George II mahogany oval drop-leaf dining table, circa 1750, and likely Irish. Of generous and highly usable proportions, the table is made in good quality Cuban mahogany, with a well-coloured oval top, single frieze drawer, carved cabriole legs and bold hoof feet. With both leaves raised, it forms a practical six-seater dining table, and could seat eight at a squeeze depending on chair size and arrangement. When not in use, the leaves drop down to create a much narrower and more versatile form, making it well suited to both dining rooms and occasional use. The likely Irish origin is a particular point of interest, with Irish Georgian furniture often associated with good quality timber, confident proportions and more decorative carved detail. This example has attractive carved knees and distinctive hoof feet, giving it considerably more presence than a plainer Georgian drop-leaf table. It presents well overall, with a good polish and generally even colour. It should be noted, however, that both leaves have had full-length repairs to the inner edges, visible as lighter strips to the top. As such, this is best regarded as a very attractive and usable mid-18th century Georgian table with character, rather than a top-condition collector’s example.
measurements
Leaves raised Width: 150.5cm / 59 1/4 inches, Depth: 133cm / 52 3/8 inches, Height: 72.25cm / 28 1/2 inches, Leaves down Width: 51cm / 20 inches
declaration
Leeds Antiques has clarified that the George II Irish Mahogany Oval Drop-leaf Dining Table, Carved Cabriole Legs & Hoof Feet (LA573376) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being Circa 1750
condition
Structurally sound, with no loose joints. The table presents well overall, with a good polished surface and generally even colour, other than the visible lighter repair strips to the inner edges of the leaves. There are odd marks, blemishes and minor running repairs commensurate with age and use. Both leaves have had repairs to the inner edges, with new pieces let in running the full length of the inside of the leaves. These repairs are visible as lighter strips to the top. The drawer base and runners have also been renewed, and the drawer may have had some later work. Priced accordingly as an attractive and practical Georgian dining table, rather than a top-condition example.
