Made in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) as decorative souvenirs and household items for British colonial officials and European tourists during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Crafted mainly in coastal trading hubs like Galle. What began as a localized craft for a few British expatriates quickly expanded into a thriving commercial export industry that peaked between 1850 and 1900.
