Description
A fine engraving of Hms Malabar leaving Harbour under Captain Sir William Montague, by Geoffrey Garnier dated 1926, after a painting by N Condy jnr. The colours are particularly strong and there is much movement in the sea and sky. Signed by the engraver lower Right. Hms Malabar was a 74 gun third-rate ship of the line in the Royal Navy ,launched in 1818 in Bombay Dockyard. It was decommissioned in 1848, eventually becoming a coal hulk under the name Myrtle. Sir William Montague, who had been a senior Naval officer during the Napoleonic Wars, was appointed captain in 1834 and continued to serve around the Mediterranean before retiring in 1837 with the rank of Vice-Admiral. Geoffrey Sneyd Garnier (1899-1970) was a an English artist and printmaker. He started life as an engineer but later studied painting and worked in Newlyn, giving lessons in etching and engraving. He was a member of the St Ives Society of Artists. Nicholas Condy junior (1816-1851) was a maritime painter. The engraving declares the original painting to be from 1832 but this is unlikely as Condy was only 16 at the time and Capt Montague was only appointed in 1834.
