Description
“Equestrian Trio” – British Art Deco Bronze Relief, Circle of John Rattenbury Skeaping, c.1925 Subject & Medium A refined British Art Deco bronze wall plaque depicting an equestrian trio of bay hunter thoroughbreds, their bridled heads shown in unified profile. The horses are modelled with noble bearing: ears pricked, necks arched, and musculature subtly defined. This intimate relief is cast in solid bronze, finished with a rich, naturally aged patina, and suspended from its original chain. The reverse bears the foundry number “7156”, indicating early 20th-century production. Composition & Technique The work is conceived in elegant low relief, balancing stylisation with faithful observation. The planes of the horses’ heads and jawlines are rendered with sculptural clarity. Bridles and reins provide crisp linear detail against the smooth modelling. The stippled background deepens contrast and creates visual rhythm. Decades of age have imparted a variegated bronze surface, enriching its character. Though modest in scale, the relief possesses a distinct sculptural weight, its disciplined lines and quiet strength exemplifying the best of Art Deco design. Attribution Uninscribed, yet clearly aligned with the circle of John Rattenbury Skeaping (1901–1980). A Royal Academician and peer of Barbara Hepworth, Skeaping was celebrated for his animalier sculpture and, above all, his horses. His works of the 1920s and 30s reveal a synthesis of athletic truth, lyrical movement, and modern clarity, qualities that resonate strongly in this plaque. Collectors of Skeaping and his circle continue to prize such pieces for their enduring artistry and refinement. Dimensions Height: 8.5 cm Width: 12 cm Depth: 0.25 cm A rare small-format equestrian bronze, intimate yet authoritative.
