Description
An original watercolour and ink painting by English artist Ethel M Mallinson dated 1921 and named "Ladies First" A beautiful painting in the Art Nouveau style, featuring a group of children enjoying buns bought for them from a confectionary shop. Ethel M. Mallinson (born 1878) was a leading member of the prestigious Leeds Fine Arts Club and exhibited pictures at the Royal Sociery of Art and Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour between 1917 and 1940. She travelled extensively, often in the company of her great friend Jessie Beatrice Kitson, sister of watercolourist Robert Hawthorn Kitson (1873–1947) and It is probably Jessie Kitson who is shown here distributing buns to the children. The painting is accompanied by a quotation "Life's as you take it - all gloom - or moderately shiny" by G. Gilling. Mallinson often included such inspirational inscriptions with her paintings, lending her work an philosophical and poetic dimension. The painting is contained within an inked border. This painting is sold unframed and is not mounted. Condition: In good condition for its age, with minor imperfections such as slight marks and toning commensurate with age. There are historic paper remnants and thinning of the sheet to the verso, from previous mounting, but no tears or repairs. Size: 9 5/8" x 6 5/8" edge to edge.
