This is a high-quality circa 1933 English Bracket Clock by H.W.Williamson Ltd (later ECWM), made under their world-renown brand name of “Astral.” (The Astral trade name came into being in 1910, when Williamson’s moved their production works to Coventry, to utilise the city's clock and watch making resources and expertise. By this time Williamson’s had become a globally respected player in the production of high-quality clocks and watches, which they continued to be and indeed enhanced from their new Coventry base. In October 1921, Williamson merged with London based clock maker Grimshaw, Baxter and J.J Elliott Ltd, becoming known as ECWM [English Clock and Watch Manufacturers Ltd], and under this new company name, high-end clocks with the Astral trade mark, continued to be designed, built and assembled in Coventry. In 1932, ECWM was then sold to Smiths English Clocks Ltd of London, who continued to use the Astral trademark and the Coventry works to manufacture clocks until 1955, and in 1934, the trade name had become known and branded as "Smiths Astral." This clock however, would have been one of the first post-Smiths takeover clocks to be made, and we know this from the stamping on the clocks backplate…Read on!). The clocks hand-crafted Walnut case (numbered ‘305’ on the base), has lovely graining and aged patina, with a domed Pagoda top and a shaped brass carrying handle. The delicate yet busy silvered chapter ring is mounted on a brass plate with black Roman numerals and additional fleur-de-lis and minute indicators with a matted brass centre and single front winding arbour. The dial is then surrounded by four brass maiden head spandrels and finished with a pair of original blued steel Louis XVI style hands secured by a pinned collet. The dial is protected and accessed via a hinged front door with glazed tablet, mounted in a sturdy Walnut frame. The clocks famously reliable, top-class Astral 8-day movement, (numbered ‘123’ by Smiths, as stamped on the backplate) is driven by an ABEC signed 7-jewelled, lever platform escapement. ABEC (All British Escapement Company Ltd), was a separate company formed by Smiths in 1929. The plates are of lacquered mill finished brass and the backplate is also stamped with the brands famous trademark (a love-heart shaped key with the wording “Coventry" and "Astral”) and the legend “Made in England.” (Only movements made up to 1934 under Smiths ownership retained this stamped legend and the Astral key logo, offering a clear and confident indication of the clocks age). An extremely well-proportioned and stylish Bracket Clock of superlative quality craftmanship and engineering, from one of England’s highly sought after and collectable brands, “Astral, Coventry!!” How to Make Payment:* - Debit / Credit Card.
