Description
Size: Frame 73 x 57.5 cm, etching within mount 54 x 39 cm (21 x 15 inches approx). Condition: Print in very good condition, even age toning, laid to card. Used frame and mount in good condition. This large etching is the work of Axel Herman Haig (1835-1921) who has been dubbed the Piranesi of the Gothic Revival. It is entitled (in pencil lower left) In The aisles of Chartres, and shows a scene in the great cathedral, with many figures (all women and children) going about their devotions. Swedish-born Haig had taken up etching in 1877, only after he had first established a reputation as one of the finest architectural draughtsmen in Victorian Britain. This etching was one of four which he exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1880 and 1883. Haig's etching had already brought him fame after his 1879 print The Vesper Bell, and his prints were snapped up by shops and galleries throughout Europe. Chartres Cathedral: In the Aisles was issued in an edition of 250 at a price of 5 guineas each. This impression is numbered no 36 after the pencil title, and we guess this to be the number in the edition. The print is also signed by the artist in pencil lower right, and in the plate with his monogram and the date 1881. Haig's chosen subject was building, and in particular Gothic buildings, which took him on travels all over Europe. However what raises his etching to artistic heights is his mix of fantasy with the architectural, and his ability to capture the mystical spirit of the buildings he observed. In this etching the quiet majesty of the great cathedral of Chartres is captured in light and shade. For literature please see "Axel Haig and the Victorian Vision of the Middle Ages", J Mordaunt Crook & C A Lennox-Boyd, 1984. This print is number 30 in their catalogue raisonée. On the reverse of the frame is a label for James Connell & Sons, Fine Art Dealers, Old Bond St, London. Please note that the print will be sent with the original frame but without glass - I can supply acrylic glazing for a small extra charge if you ask.
