Description
Fine Pair of 1920s Walnut and Leather Wing Chairs in the Late Baroque Manner and of Baronial Size and Scale
These large wing chairs are of a scale befitting of a baronial manor house or other country mansion. Of conventional form and newly upholstered in our workshops in patinated leather aged in the traditional manner, the chairs have outscrolling arms and deep backs. The backs are buttoned for that Chesterfield look. There are removable leather squab cushions as well. The upholstery nailing on the leather contrasts beautifully against the patinated hide and the frames of the pieces are executed in finely carved walnut in the late baroque manner, the front stretchers beautifully carved with figures, probably angels or putti, flanking a heart motif and probably suggesting that the chairs were made as a his and hers marital set. The short cabriole legs are reminiscent of those seen on William and Mary period pieces.
The chairs were made around 1920 when there was a renewed fascination with pieces from the age of oak and walnut, leading to dealers such as Gill and Reigate, Lenygon and Morant, Druce and Co and Gregory and Co who sold fine antique pieces and “style of” and reproduction examples alongside them. The present pieces were clearly designed to feature the comfort of buttoned leather backs alongside the look of a late 17th century wing chair, the scale making it clear that these pieces when new would have been retailed to an elite clientele.
