Description
Size: Mount 26.5 x 34.5 cm: drawing 15.5 cm, 7.5 cm and 6.5 cm wide from the top. Condition: drawings in excellent condition mounted on original card, mount new. These superb little drawings in pencil with watercolour are a design for a stained glass window, or series of windows. The concept of the drawings is that they would be shown to the client and also followed in the production of the final window. The designs are the production of the firm of T W Camm limited, a stained glass window company based in Smethwick, Birmingham. The studio ran from 1865 until the 1960's from 1912 under the direction of Florence Camm, who is recognised as one of the best designers of stained glass in the 20th century. Her work is exhibited in the Birmingham City Art Gallery. These drawings are almost certainly by Florence Camm, judging from their high quality and the style which she adopted. They can be dated to about 1930 by the model numbers written on the mounts, and this is corroborated by the overall style including the Art Deco fashion heavy leading. The window is based on the story of Undine, an early German Romance which became a popular inspiration for art in many media during the 19th right up to the present day. Undine is a water spirit who marries a knight called Huldebrand, in order to gain a soul. As you might expect, there is a catch, and the story does not end well. The top panels show four medieval style sailing ships, a dove and a buoy, and the castle on a rock in the sea. The central panels show Huldebrand and Undine, and the lower panels repeat the ships and the dove. Each little watercolour is very nicely done with pencil detail and subtle colouring.
