Flower Engraved Opaque Twist Wine Glass c.1760

Engraved 18th century wine glass. An ovoid bowl engraved with a stylised Carnation with three buds either side and a large moth on the reverse. Double series opaque twist stem consisting of a pair of spiral tapes outside a pair of spiral tapes. Conical foot. It would be fair to say that this is a Jacobite Sympathy glass. In 1760, being a Jacobite was a death sentence, so their glasses were disguised with various flowers and insects, the moth being a symbol of rebirth and reincarnation. Jacobites and their love of carnations are well documented. We have included a portrait of Louisa Maria Stuart from 1704, known to the Jacobites as Princess Royal, which hangs in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. It shows her large red and white carnation above her right breast with further carnations in her hair. Date & Origin:- England, c1760 Period of George III
