St James Collectables

Each piece in my collection is chosen for its craftsmanship, authenticity, and quiet sense of history. I specialise in antique silver, maritime objects, property of a gentleman and late 19th century as well as early 20th century designs, curating items that tell the story of refined leisure and skilled workmanship.
These are objects made to be used, admired, and handed down—each one a small testament to the artistry and precision of its era.

Description
Fort Stamford British Army Tug-of-War Champions, 1927–1928 – Western Command Cup Winners
An outstanding and historically significant original photograph depicting a British Army tug-of-war team stationed at Fort Stamford, Plymouth, following a championship victory during the 1927–1928 season.
The image is prominently titled “FORT STAMFORD” and shows the team in formal formation, accompanied by an array of trophies. A central placard clearly records their achievement as winners of both the Ashton Cup and the Western Command Cup, placing this photograph firmly within the structure of British Army inter-command sporting competitions of the interwar period.
Fort Stamford itself was part of the 19th-century defensive network protecting Plymouth — one of Britain’s most important naval bases—and continued in use as a barracks and training facility into the 20th century .
By the 1920s, such locations fostered strong traditions of athletic competition among troops, with tug-of-war being one of the most physically demanding and prestigious events.
This photograph captures not only a winning team, but a moment of pride, discipline, and camaraderie within the British Army between the World Wars.
The frame is oak and has new glass and the back made ready for hanging
