Four Lithographs Laid on Indian Paper dating 1829 from the collections of J C Burgess 'Images of Chelsea' as seen and recorded in Elizabeth Longford's 'Images of Chelsea'. plates 575, 569, 152 printed by William Day. Day & Son: The most famous early Victorian firm of lithographic printing was by created Day and Haghe in 1829. Their lithographs were so meticulously conceived and technically advanced that in 1838, Day and Haghe were appointed 'Lithographers to the Queen'. John Cart Burgess (1798 – 20 February 1863) was an English watercolour painter of flowers and landscapes, and an author of two books on art technique. He was part of the well-known Burgess dynasty of painters who flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries.Burgess was the son of portrait-painter, William Burgess (1749–1812), and the grandson of Thomas Burgess (fl. 1766–1786). His brothers were the painters Henry William Burgess (fl. 1809–1844) and Thomas Burgess (1784?–1807). John started off as a painter of flowers and fruit in watercolours, first exhibiting three flower pieces at the Royal Academy, London in 1812; he was then residing at 46 Sloane Square in Chelsea. He also exhibited at the Suffolk Street Gallery and the British Institution. His works were much admired, and in brilliancy and beauty of execution were said to rival those of Van Huysum. John Cart Burgess (1798–1863) is primarily famous in Chelsea for his historical, antique view titled "Chelsea From Cheyne Walk" , which depicts the River Thames at Chelsea with small boats . Description for Chelsea From Cheyne Walk :A view of the River Thames at Chelsea at low tide with beached boats on the riverbank. One larger boat dominates the foreground with smaller boats scattered along the shoreline. The old bridge can be seen on the far right of the print. Signature Info: No formal signature present. Printed identifier of Artist and Printer. Condition: Very Good. Very good condition, marginal stains from old tape on verso. No further damage or signs of aging. Professionally framed to museum quality. Description for Chelsea From Cheyne Walk: A view of the riverfront buildings at Cheyne Walk. There are pedestrians walking along the riverfront as well as some sitting on the riverside barrier. The old church can be seen in the background with shops lining the right side of the composition. Signature Info: No formal signature present. Printed identifier of Artist and Printer. Condition: Good. Good condition. Evidence of moisture stains, but no textural damage. No further damage or signs of aging. Professionally framed to museum quality. Description for Chelsea From Cheyne Walk:A view of the River Thames at Chelsea at low tide with beached boats on the riverbank. The picture looks upstream with boats on the river depicted on the left and the riverbank on the left. In the centre of the composition, smoke is visible from factory chimneys. Signature Info: No formal signature present. Printed identifier of Artist and Printer. Condition: Very Good. Very good condition, marginal stains from old tape on verso. No further damage or signs of aging. Professionally framed to museum quality. Description for Chelsea from the Bridge :A view on the River Thames at Chelsea, with the tower of Chelsea Old Church behind the waterfront buildings. Some small boats moored close to the houses on the waterfront with some beached boats on the riverbank depicted further to the right side of the composition. Signature Info: No formal signature present. Printed identifier of Artist and Printer. Condition: Good. Good condition. Evidence of moisture stains, but no textural damage. No further damage or signs of aging. Professionally framed to museum quality.
