Description
France. Antique Senior Officer’s Sword, Model 1872/84. Third Republic Elegant antique French senior officer’s sword for all branches, corresponding to model 1872/84 and datable to the period of the Third Republic. It is a regulation piece of notable quality, intended for officers of high rank and clearly representative of the formal refinement that characterizes certain French edged weapons of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its typology combines military sobriety, ornamental richness, and a very balanced silhouette, resulting in a particularly attractive piece from both a historical and collecting point of view. The hilt is made of gilt brass and shows careful workmanship, with chased decoration visible on several of its elements. The knuckle guard displays relief ornamentation, with a central rosette motif, giving elegance and personality to the hilt. The pommel, of truncated conical form, blends harmoniously into the whole and retains the characteristic appearance of this type of French senior officer’s sword. On the reverse side it also preserves the folding counter guard, a technical detail typical of this kind of regulation model. The grip is made of dark wood, without wire binding, with very pronounced grooves. The upper and lower ferrules also display chased decoration, integrating very harmoniously with the rest of the hilt. The shell guard, oval in shape, is richly decorated with a wreath of oak and laurel leaves superimposed over a trophy of six flags, a symbolic composition with clear military language and great visual impact. This ornamental motif gives distinction to the whole and sets the piece apart from more sober or utilitarian models. The blade is straight, long, and clearly intended for thrusting, with an elegant and very clean profile. It corresponds to the type of double edged blade with a central ridge typical of this model. Its line is slender and harmonious, very characteristic of French regulation senior officer’s swords of this period. It retains a good overall appearance, with wear and signs of use consistent with its age. It retains its original iron scabbard, with one suspension ring, an element that completes the set and reinforces its interest for collectors. The scabbard is also in very good condition, which always adds value in this type of piece, especially when dealing with officer’s models. The state of preservation is very good for its age. The hilt retains its decorative definition well, with logical wear to the gilding in some areas. As a whole, it is a complete example with very good presence, clearly representative of French senior officer’s swords from the republican period. We are dealing here with a particularly attractive French regulation sword, both for the quality of its hilt and for the symbolic richness of its decoration. A serious, elegant piece with strong historical presence, ideal for a collection of French militaria, European regulation edged weapons, or sets focused on high ranking officers. Measurements: Total length: 102.5 cm (40.35 in). Blade length: 87 cm (34.25 in).
