Frederick Tayler PRWS 1892-1889. Landscape, figure and sporting painter, illustrator and etcher and lithographer. Studied Sass’s Academy, RA Schools, under Vernet in Paris and Rome. Father of artist Norman Tayler. Exhibited at RWS, RCA, The Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and elsewhere. Awarded gold medals at the Paris Exhibition of 1855,in Bavaria 1859,and Vienna in 1872.Tayler was a frequent guest at country houses in Scotland and often had aristocratic pupils. Queen Victoria purchased several of his pictures, which are now in the Royal Collection. Tayler handled watercolour with free fluid strokes which he seems to have derived from Cox, and Ruskin compares them. Many examples of his work are in the VAM,BM and in the Dixon Bequest, Bethnal Green Museum. ‘The Hunting Party’ initialled watercolour dated 1870; image size24x34cms,framed size 44x52 cms.
