Frederik Rohde, Rural Scene With Chickens, Landscape Painting

A fine mid-19th-century oil painting depicting a rural scene with chickens, buildings and figures by Danish golden age painter, Frederik Rohde (1816-1886). Rohde’s treatment of light here is sublime. Note how he’s lit the indent on the right-hand side of the building along with the track beyond the figure. This technique gives the scene depth and pulls us closer towards it. The composition is also beautifully balanced even though the track is uneven and heading upwards. Frederik Rohde trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and remains highly regarded for his exquisite landscapes. There’s a chance that this particular piece was created during a trip to Italy in the 1860s. The architecture and scenery are reminiscent of his other works from this period. Rohde is also known for training the great Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864-1916) during the early part of his life. The painting is monogrammed in the lower left and housed within a period frame. Medium: Oil on canvas laid on board Overall size: 18” x 14½” / 45cm x 37cm Year of creation: c. 1865 Provenance: Denmark Condition: Very presentable. Frame with some age-related wear. Artist’s auction highlight: £5,510 achieved for ‘Udsigt mod Joenstrup Seminarium’ in 2004.
