Mid Victorian inlaid rosewood fully fitted jewellery – box in exceptional condition. No missing or replaced veneer. Unspoilt patina. Original inlaid Mother of Pearl shield style cartouche and escutcheon. Side drawer accessed by removing the original brass locking rod located to the box interior. The sprung drawer features the original lining and central divider in very clean condition….ideal storage for those longer items of jewellery. The lid of the box closes perfectly square. Original hinges and lock with a working key supplied. The key is not a perfect fit but it does operate the lock therefore all contents including contents placed in the side drawer can be made secure. Velvet panel to the lid interior that can be released and folded forward to give access to a ‘love letter’ envelope to the back. Both side folds to the envelope are still fully intact. Recessed mirror directly behind the panel. The main storage section to the base section comprises of the original 3 sets of storage jars all in very fine condition and four other storage sections. The velvet lids are all original and feature subtle embossed patterns and matching Mother of Pearl knobs. One section features hooped retainers for various Mother of Pearl accessories comprising of a manicure item, button hook and fruit knife. I cannot state that the accessories are original to the box but can state that they are in excellent condition and the knife is clearly stampedto reflect that is was made during the Victorian period. There is also a St Christopher medallion that was made in Italy. Additional storage space beneath the tray. All velvet and lining throughout the box is original, complete and is outstanding condition, as are all the storage sections. Sadly many traders are now removing the containers from vanity boxes and selling them separately as generally more profit can be made in so doing. This example has had little to no use and merits remaining as it is. As it stands it would make an excellent jewellery box given the many vacant storage areas but if additional storage were to be required surely it would make far more sense to retain the various jars for both future investment and to preserve such a fine piece of Victorian woodenware. Recommended. Unpacked weight 3.2 Kg
