Georgian Period Painted Sideboard George Seddon & Sons
English Georgian (1795-1805) period painted sideboard attributed to George Seddon & Sons, figured mahogany top surmounted with original gilt brass gallery adorned with cast acorns.
The highly figured mahogany top is surmounted with the original gilt brass gallery adorned to the upright columns are crisply cast acorns. The top section's decorated edge has an inverted centre section above a single long drawer, flanked by two short deep drawers.
The right hand drawer is fitted with wooden divisions and the left hand drawer is lead lined with all the locks having been replaced and the original wooden knobs having been removed at some point to accommodate the existing gilt brass ring-pulled handles.
The 'Rare' is the original paintwork that decorates the front of the sideboard to simulate 18th century Sheraton furniture. The crossbanding, stringing and inlaid shell motifs are all hand painted and original. The drawer fronts are made with high grade flamed Cuban mahogany and offer the original artist a quality background to work on.
The centre arch below the drawer is repeated at the back of the sideboard so the cabinet maker has offered the impression of the arches continuing through the underside of the sideboard.
The well-drawn 4ft 8in wide sideboard is raised on crisply carved ring-turned and tapered legs that have been made in the solid.
The Seddon family furniture business, later known as Seddon, Son and Shackleton, was a prominent London firm active from the mid-18th to late 19th centuries. Founded by George Seddon, the company rose to prominence, becoming one of London's largest, known for its high-quality furniture in fashionable styles. The firm eventually included George's sons, and later his son-in-law Thomas Shackleton, in the partnership.
