Georgian Scrollwork Tea Caddy - Quill Work. Antique 18th Century Gilt Paper Scroll Caddy Box

This fabulous Georgian scrollwork tea caddy which dates from c1790 is hexagonal in shape and has been skilfully hand decorated with very fine and intricate detail using gilt rolled paper (quill work). Quill work or scroll work involves the use of paper strips that are rolled to create decorative designs. This was popular in the 18th century in Europe. This tea caddy has a silver coloured metal top handle in the form of a double spouted teapot, hinged lid with a tin lined interior and an interior lift out lid which has a bone handle and sits on top of the tea to preserve freshness. There is great attention to detail with tiny banding of the edges and around the burr walnut inlay. A lock is fitted to the front and can be locked using the tea caddy's original key which is unusual to still have. Tea was a very expensive and luxury item in Georgian times so would have been stored and locked away in a caddy. A highly decorative antique piece in wonderful condition being over 230 years old. Date: 18th Century - circa 1790.
