Description
Georgian two‑drawer oak lamp table / side table - powdery distressed mottled antique green - 18th Century original, reborn in a green that carries centuries in its soul. Material: Solid oak Period: Georgian, mid-18th century Finish: Powdery distressed mottled green specialist finish with layered patina Features: Two drawers with original brass backplates and swan-neck handles; canted legs with hand-detailed edges. On Display Now: This piece is currently available to view and purchase at our shop: White’s Antiques, 53 High Street, Arundel, West Sussex There are pieces that simply exist, and there are pieces that perform. This Georgian oak table - with its canted legs, hand-detailed edges, and original brass swan-neck handles - belongs firmly in the latter category. Restored with care in our West Sussex workshops, it now wears our Powdery Distressed Mottled Green Specialist Finish: a labour-intensive, hand-layered process that turns light into a co-conspirator. The Patina of Possibility - The base tone is a true antique green - softly mottled and gently powdery, with undertones that shift in changing light. Our palette draws from Georgian and Continental references, applied in layered stages to create depth without heaviness. The result is a surface alive with nuance, impossible to replicate by machine. See image: Patina close-up - powdery, mottled layers and gentle edge wear Because oak carries its own natural pigments and grain, subtle variations occur across the piece. These are not imperfections - they are the signature of a hand-finished process. Heritage & Craftsmanship:- Georgian in proportion and spirit, the table’s refined carcass work is balanced by practical details: twin drawers with original brass backplates and swan-neck handles, and canted legs with edges finished by hand. See image: Hardware detail - original brass backplate and swan-neck handle See image: Leg profile - canted leg with hand-detailed edge See image: Drawer interior - clean interior; smooth action See image: Top surface - even sheen with subtle grain movement The new finish honours the original timber and silhouette while making the piece ready for contemporary living. The Georgian Era:- This table was crafted during a time of profound transformation. Between 1760 and 1800, Britain saw the rise of the Industrial Revolution, the invention of the steam engine, and the birth of modern democracy. It was a century of Enlightenment, empire, and artistic achievement - and this table carries that legacy in its grain. Key Historical Milestones:- George III ascends the throne (1760) James Watt invents the steam engine (1766) The Boston Tea Party (1773) Declaration of Independence (1776) French Revolution begins (1789) Authentic Character:- Expect softened corners, faint grain telegraphing beneath the paint, and a calm, even sheen rather than gloss. This is the look of a well-kept survivor -quietly sophisticated, never contrived. Specialist Paint Finishes:- Inspired heritage: Palettes drawn from Georgian, Victorian, and Continental traditions. By hand, with heart: Traditional techniques meet modern precision. Crafted slowly, perfected gently: Layered processes allowed to mature naturally for depth and authenticity. Sustainability:- Restoration over reproduction is the most elegant kind of stewardship. By renewing this Georgian table for modern use, we preserve craftsmanship, reduce waste, and keep beautiful materials in circulation. Style Notes:- Pair with: A linen-shaded lamp, a stack of well-loved books, a small bronze or stoneware vessel Setting: Beside a deep armchair, under a mirror in a hallway, or as a nightstand with character Palette: Chalks, flax, and inky accents let the green sing; aged brass and natural woods harmonise beautifully Purchase with Confidence:- When you choose to purchase from us, you are not just acquiring a piece of furniture - you are embracing a piece of history. Our commitment to quality and authenticity ensures that every item is paired with detailed photographs and a comprehensive description.
