The Georgian period describes the era in Britain between the reigns of King George I starting in 1714 to the death of George IV in 1830. It also often includes the Reign of William IV up to 1837. Interest in the aesthetics of classical proportion and form were transforming 18th Century architecture, and these principles spilled over into the design of furniture. Among the luminaries who would leave their mark on history were designers such as Thomas Chippendale, George Hepplewhite, Thomas Sheraton, Thomas Hope & William Kent. Each published popular books of their designs, and it is these (more than the physical commissions they undertook) which would inspire the styles which still bear their names.
For many, great Georgian furniture is accented by elegant cabriole legs, carved or inlaid classical motifs such as shells, busts and geometric patterns, as well as the use of brass as an inlay or for hardware. Chair backs had detailed fretwork designs, the feet had carved lions paws and the arms were wide and sweeping. Tables were elegant and understated. Not only were the finest exotic timbers such as Jamaican Mahogany, Rosewood and Satinwood being imported and used in the construction, but the designs often hinted at a love for the Orient. While the later Victorians would revel in decoration for its own sake, the Georgian era was one of refined hand-made quality and simplicity. It is this sense of physical poise and practical elegance which makes Georgian furniture still highly prized around the world today.
