Description
A fine and atmospheric Edwardian watercolour of Rye Harbour by Herbert Menzies Marshall VPRWS RE ROI (1841–1913), signed and dated 1907. The composition displays Marshall’s characteristic mastery of light and architectural form, capturing the quiet elegance of this historic Sussex harbour.
The work is presented in its original Chapman Bros of Kings Road, London frame, a period piece in keeping with the date of the painting, and protected under glass. It remains in excellent condition, with only light foxing and some minor debris under the glass, both consistent with age.
About the Artist – Herbert Menzies Marshall (1841–1913)
Herbert Menzies Marshall was one of the most atmospheric Edwardian painters of urban and coastal topography. Born in Leeds in 1841, he was educated at Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge, and initially trained as an architect in Paris under Charles-Auguste Questel. Following a period of ill health, he turned to watercolour painting, exhibiting his first work in 1871.
Marshall was elected Associate of the Royal Society of Painters in Water-Colours in 1879, became a full member in 1882, and served as Vice-President between 1898 and 1900. He also held memberships with the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers and the Royal Institute of Painters in Oils, winning a silver medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris. In 1904, he was appointed Professor of Landscape Painting at Queen’s College, London.
Today, his works are prized for their delicate handling of architectural and maritime subjects, and for their ability to convey atmosphere with refined accuracy.
