Description
A charming portrait of an old woman at her spinning wheel, chatting to a young boy. Hubert von Herkomer (1849-1914) was a German born British painter and also a pioneering film director and composer! He was a very successful portraitist, especially of men, but is best remembered for his early work which took a realistic look at the conditions of the poor. This is one of those early works. Signed in pencil lower right. Herkomer came from a poor family but managed to become a member of the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours and a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers. He was on familiar terms with the Royal Family and was appointed a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO), an honour in the personal gift of the Queen.
