Description
We present for consideration this immaculate late Victorian fusee wall clock with 12” dial, by registered Scottish clockmakers, James Ritchie & Son, of 25 Leith Street, Edinburgh.
Born in Edinburgh, 1858, James Ritchie came from a successful Edinburgh clockmaking family dynasty, that went back to the late 1700’s. Having served his apprentiship under his father Frederick Ritchie at Leith Street, James became head of the family business in c1890 when his father stepped back, and by 1901, he was employing some 8 men in their Leith Street workshop. The business name also changed to ‘James Ritchie & Son’ c1895, when James’ oldest son, Charles, also joined the business.
During the period c1890 to 1905, Ritchie resided at 6 Brunton Place, Edinburgh, with his wife and family, and along with his clockmaking son, Charles, and brother Leone, the business continued to run successfully well into the 20th Century.
• Solid Mahogany roundhead face over a its well-proportioned boxed cabinet internally numbered “517.”
• Hinged inspection door located to the side of the box.
• Turn-catch regulator door located at the bottom of the box.
• Original metal dial and artwork, with black Roman numerals and the Ritchie & Son details.
• Retains its original pair of blued Spade hands, secured with a pinned collet.
• Front glaze mounted in a brass bezel, incorporating a canted silvered brass fillet to the interior.
• Quality 8-day single fusee chain driven movement, with rectangular brass plates (stamped with the clock’s serial numbers) and turned pillars.
• Comes with its original 75mm diameter brass pendulum bob and a brass winding key.
