Description
We present for consideration, this immaculate early Victorian English fusee wall clock with convex dial, by clock, watchmaker, and bell founder Charles Thorneloe, of Tamworth Street, Lichfield, Staffordshire.
• A narrow solid Mahogany turned roundhead face, that sits over its boxed cabinet. Offering lovely, aged patination and deep colouring.
• Hinged inspection door located to the side of the box.
• Operable lockable regulator door located at the bottom of the box.
• Convex metal dial, with black Roman numerals and Thorneloe’s details.
• Retains its original pair of blued Breguet Empire hands, secured with a pinned collet.
• Original convex glaze mounted in a brass bezel.
• Quality 8-day single fusee movement set between shouldered plates and knopped pillars.
• Comes with its 70mm diameter brass pendulum bob, with door key and a brass winding key.
Born c1802 in Lichfield, Thorneloe spent his entire life in and around the historic old city. Such was enviable reputation for high-quality, that he was known throughout the country. His wife Sarah (who was 11 years his senior), was the company accountant and between the pair, they ran a very successful business with 10 employees. In 1850, Thorneloe became a Lichfield City Councillor.
Thorneloe lived to 80 years of age, before he passed away a wealthy man, on 21 December 1885 at his home in an affluent suburb of Lichfield. In his Will, the business was passed to his younger brother John, presumably because Thorneloe had no children to pass it on to.
