Mid Victorian inlaid walnut jewellery/work box in very fine condition. Very attractive grain. No missing or replaced veneer. Inlaid twin brass strips to the top and front that crossover to form a square feature to each of the eight corners. Rosette style inlaid cartouche and escutcheon. Unspoilt patina to the veneer AND the brass inlay. The latter could quite easily be cleaned to a gold like lustre but the patina does contribute to the antique character of the box. The lid closes perfectly square. Original hinges and lock and possibly the original working key. The condition of the interior certainly surpasses expectation for a box of the style and period. Original ruched silk panel to the lid interior. Original swing clasp to the top that when released provides access to a ‘love letter’ envelope. Both of the side folds and the base fold line are fully intact. All lining throughout the box is original with just minor stains. Removable tray complete with all dividers and lids. All material throughout is free of tears and stains. There can be no doubt whatsoever that this box has had very little use over the course of circa 150 years. Nowadays the vast majority of antique work boxes are put to practical modern day use as a jewellery box. The small storage sections within the tray are ideal for small items and the open storage beneath the tray ideal for those larger pieces. One very attractive piece of Victorian woodenware with an extremely high degree of original features and verging upon unused condition. Unpacked weight 1.4Kg
