Inlaid Flame Mahogany & Rosewood Box c.1890

Though of quite small dimensions there can be little denying that this box is a stylish and very attractive piece of antique woodenware. Veneered with very attractive flame mahogany and framed to all edges with rosewood. Flame mahogany grain is generally regarded as The most attractive cut of mahogany with a grain that appears a different colour according to the viewing position/angle. Proud edges to the base. Inlay to the top centre comprising of small diamond shapes of contrasting veneers. The box carcass is solid mahogany. The lid closes perfectly square. Hinges and lock in excellent condition with a replacement working key supplied. Original solid mahogany dividers. All interior surfaces have been relined by a previous owner with green felt, all free of tears and stains. The interior sections measure 12cm x 5cm & 7.5cm x 5cm….all with a depth of 3.5cm. In truth it is not always possible to provide an accurate estimate of when a box was made when there are so few clues therefore a later date has been provided than the item possibly is. Though insignificant it is reflective of the care of the box maker that the extremely small tip of the key escutcheon extends onto the lid by approximately 3mm and the maker bothered to continue the detail to the lid!! Save for two very tiny filled chips to the veneer at the back edge of the box all wood and veneer is in wonderful condition. Nothing grand but an eye catching piece nevertheless. Unpacked weight 0.4Kg
