Description
Inlaid jewellery – work box made during the late 1800’s in very good condition. Aside from the key every aspect of the box is original and in a condition that would suggest that it has had very little use. No missing or replaced veneer. Inlaid brass cartouche and escutcheon. Sewn pleated panel to the lid interior that probably originally folded forward but is now (like most) firmly attached to the lid. No tears to the material. The base section features a removable tray with ‘open’ storage beneath. Some of the lining to the main storage section is stained but all lining is complete. It could of course be very easily painted to the original colour or indeed relined but it is clean to the touch. The tray is in extremely good condition. All dividers are present, all lids etc free of tears and the hoops to the lid to the centre for retaining various sewing accessories are fully intact. The hinges and lock are in very good condition and the replacement key does secure the box though sometimes the key needs to be turned back twice to unlock the mechanism. It is better to view the photographs rather than describe the various accessories/contents as they are numerous and varied. Suffice to say they would be very welcomed by someone about to set up home or for someone that does a fair amount of sewing, basically they are good for emergencies like loose buttons, loose seams/ hems etc. The vast majority of antique sewing boxes are now put to good modern day use as jewellery boxes and this box is no exception with the many small sections within the tray ideal for those smaller items of jewellery and the open storage beneath for those larger items and/or boxed jewellery. Unpacked weight 1.8 Kg
