Early Victorian (possibly a little pre Victorian) inlaid rosewood jewellery – work box in very good condition with a particularly large degree of original features. Attractive grain with even colour and void of any light bleaching. Unspoilt patina. No missing or replaced veneer or inlays. Slightly rounded edges with rosewood inserts that have certainly done the intended job to preserve against damage/lifting of the rosewood end grain. The ornate inlays comprise of a combination of floral, foliage and birds (possibly a bird of paradise). The birds feature to the top centre and all four corners of the front and top of the box. All inlays are in excellent condition. The lid closes perfectly square. Original hinges and lock, key for decorative purposes only. The lid interior features the original material fronted panel that when released via a swing clasp folds forward to access a ‘love letter’ envelope with both side folds still fully intact. The base section has a removable tray with storage space beneath. The tray is in quite remarkable condition. Please note the metal beading to all the top edges, all complete and in very fine condition. The beading was a relatively common feature on work/sewing boxes during the late Regency-early Victorian period but more often than not there are considerable losses of the beading. All dividers and lids are original as are the side metal tray handles, the knobs to the two lids and the pull tabs. The large central lid would have originally had a hooped band to the centre to retain sewing accessories but in reality the missing band has little to no effect upon the appearance and is more than compensated by the fact that all material throughout is free of tears and all lining throughout and all fittings are original. There is a small amount of wear to the paper lining primarily in the areas that where the tray has rubbed against the inner box carcass…….as to be expected. It is however very apparent that this box has had very little use over the course of the past 180 or so years. Nowadays the vast majority of antique work boxes are put to good modern day use as jewellery boxes. The various small sections within the tray and the open storage beneath being well suited for the purpose. Beautiful example of the style and period and a box that surpasses the quality and appeal of nigh on all modern produced jewellery boxes. Given the condition and degree of original features the box should also represent a sound investment piece. Recommended.
