Description
A superb late Victorian or Edwardian silver-plated novelty golfing inkstand by the celebrated Sheffield manufacturer James Deakin & Sons, dating to circa 1900.
This impressive desk stand features a finely modelled golfer at the top of his backswing, complete with a long golf club and a small ball positioned on the textured ground beneath him.
On either side are two wonderfully designed hinged inkwells formed as early mesh-pattern golf balls. Both open to reveal removable ceramic ink liners. The shaped stand is further decorated with finely engraved foliage, applied pen rests, an ornamental border and four elaborate scroll feet.
The underside bears the impressed maker’s mark:
“JAMES DEAKIN & SONS
SHEFFIELD”
It also carries the company’s distinctive desk-bell trademark and the pattern number “S8252”.
James Deakin founded his Sheffield business in 1866. The company became highly regarded for its silver and quality electroplated wares, particularly its imaginative novelty and sporting designs.
This particular model is documented by the Society of Inkwell Collectors as a James Deakin & Sons golfing inkstand dating from around 1900.
A substantial and highly decorative piece appealing to collectors of antique golfing memorabilia, novelty silver plate and fine desk accessories. It would make an exceptional display piece or gift for a golfer.
