Description
A superb and highly decorative late Victorian silver-plated novelty cricket toast rack, circa 1890–1900, wonderfully modelled throughout with an abundance of cricketing detail.
The six-division rack is formed from five pairs of crossed cricket bats, with a set of angled cricket stumps and bails positioned at either end.
Particularly charming is the substantial carrying handle, fashioned as a cricketer’s belt and buckle mounted upon a cricket ball.
The whole stands upon four finely modelled cricket-ball feet, completing this wonderfully inventive piece of late Victorian sporting tableware.
The toast rack is of notably heavy and substantial construction, weighing approximately 500 grams, and has a small unidentified pictorial maker’s or manufacturer’s mark to the frame.
A very appealing piece of Victorian cricket memorabilia, combining sporting history with the Victorian enthusiasm for novelty silver and silver-plated tableware.
