Description
Japanese Antique late 19th Century pair gilded bronze statues, depicting Samantabhadra and Manjushri Bodhisattva of Mahayana Buddhism that emphasizes the Bodhisattva ideal, where practitioners vow to attain enlightenment to save all sentient beings, rather than seeking only individual liberation.
Good condition with age related wear and verdigris.
Samantabhadra and Manjushri are two of the ‘Eight Great Bodhisattvas’ in Mahayana Buddhism, often flanking Shakyamuni Buddha to represent the duality of practice and wisdom. Samantabhadra embodies meditation, vows, and active compassion (often riding an elephant), while Manjushri embodies transcendent wisdom, wielding a sword to cut through ignorance (usually seated on a lion).
