Description
A dark patinated bronze of the Greek Maiden Sappho seated on a low hoofed stool above a brass inlaid mahogany plinth. Jean Jaques Pradier 1792-1852 was a distinguished artist and sculptor. He became Professor at the Ecole Des Beaux Arts in Paris and won several prestigious prizes and honours. He had many public commissions, his best known the decorative sculpture on the Arc de Triomphe, The Madeleine and Napoleon's Tomb in Les Invalides. Many of his works in marble were also cast in bronze, including Sappho , 1852. Fine hairline crack to neck otherwise in excellent condition.
