Description
John Atkinson 1863-1924.Animal and landscape painter in oil,tempera and watercolour.He was an etcher and illustrator.Born in Newcastle he attended classes at the School of Art,Newcastle and is said to have briefly studied under Wilson Hepple.In 1900 he decided to become a full-time professional artist after establishing a reputation from frequent exhibitions at the Beswick Club,Newcastle.He moved to Glaisdale e where he remained until just before the First World War.He returned to Newcastle in 1914 where he set up a studio and practised almost uninterruptedly for nearly ten years until his death in 1924..He is buried in the Saltwell Cemetery,Gateshead. Atkinson exhibited widely throughout his career including at the Royal Academy,Royal Scottish Academy,the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and at many provincial galleries and exhibitions. ‘ Ploughing the Furrows’ signed watercolour,image size 37x54 cms,framed size 58x76cms.Housed in its original decorative gilt frame.A good example of the artists work it is one of a pair in stock by this artist
