Description
A good landscape watercolour of the The Hope St John’s, Isle of Man by much sought after Isle of Man artist, William Hoggatt. Signed lower right.
Beautifully mounted and framed; the painting having been professionally cleaned. A superb example.
William Hoggatt (1879 - 1961) was born in Lancaster of a Cumbrian father and Scottish mother. He won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art, however did not take it up and became an apprentice of a local stained glass makers.
William Hoggatt continued his studies at the school of art in Lancaster''s Storey Institute. Aided by one of the Storeys, William went onto study at the Academie Julian in Paris, 1901 - 05.
William met his future wife, Dazine, whilst working on a commission at the Tate Gallery. Both parents opposed their intended marriage, so William and Dazine eloped to the Isle of Man in 1907.
After moving to the Isle of Man, William Hoggatt painted mainly Manx subjects, many of which were of scenes within walking distance of his home in Port Erin.
William Hoggatt was a prolific and widespread exhibitor, especially at the RA Summer Exhibition, also RSA and RSW. He was a member of a number of exhibiting societies, including RI, RBC and RCamA, and was president of the Manx Artists. In 1934 he won a competition to design a stained glass window commemorating the work of T E Brown, the Isle of Man''s national poet.
Works by William Hoggatt can be found in the Manx Museum and in the collection of galleries in Liverpool, Manchester, Oldham and Preston, as well as a number of Australian galleries.
