Large 17th Century Dutch Delft Chinoiserie Blue & White Faience Vase c.1670 Brief Description: This is an impressive 17th-century Dutch Delft blue and white faience vase, dating to circa 1670, of tall faceted baluster form with a distinctive bulbous upper section and elongated neck. The vase is richly hand-painted throughout in cobalt blue with charming Chinoiserie figural and landscape decoration, arranged within individual vertical panels. Chinese-inspired figures are shown standing and walking amongst trees and stylised landscape settings, with further floral and scroll motifs decorating the neck, shoulders and lower body. The shape is especially striking, with its pronounced faceted construction, rounded upper knop and broad lower body creating a very sculptural silhouette. This type of Chinese-inspired decoration became highly fashionable amongst the Delft potteries during the second half of the 17th century, reflecting the enormous European appetite for imported Chinese porcelain. The vase has traditionally been associated with the Delft pottery ’t Fortuyn, founded by Joris Jansz. Mesch, who owned the factory from 1661 until he died in 1674. The base bears an old inscription/mark which has been identified as relating to the IMES mark used by Mesch and subsequently by his widow. A substantial and highly decorative example of early Dutch Delftware, combining architectural form, strong period colour and wonderfully characterful hand-painted decoration.
