Large 17th-Century Japanese Edo Period Blue & White Porcelain Charger – For TLC Brief Description: This is a large and highly decorative 17th-century Japanese Edo period blue and white porcelain charger, extensively hand-painted in underglaze cobalt blue and offered as a genuine restoration project. This impressive early charger features a large central shaped reserve, beautifully decorated with flowering and leafy branches, surrounded by an elaborate radiating border divided into alternating decorative panels. The individual panels incorporate stylised floral and foliate subjects interspersed with geometric and diaper-pattern ornament, producing a wonderfully intricate composition typical of the richly decorated blue and white wares produced during the Edo period. The reverse is similarly decorated in underglaze blue with a series of freely painted circular and linear motifs surrounding the broad foot rim. We date the charger to the 17th century, Edo period, circa 1660. Despite its present condition, this remains an extremely decorative piece of early Japanese blue and white porcelain and, importantly, the principal detached sections from the lower portion have been retained, making it a particularly worthwhile candidate for sympathetic professional restoration.
